Nerve Entrapment Syndromes
As the nerve roots exit the neck they will form several peripheral nerves that travel along the shoulder and down the arm all the way to the hand and fingers. These nerves will supply the muscles, joints, skin, blood vessels, and fascia of the arm. Anywhere along this course the nerves can become entrapped and irritated by the surrounding muscles and ligaments. It is very common for these nerves to become entrapped around the muscles and ligaments of the elbow and forearm. When this occurs it can produce symptoms such as pain, numbness, tingling, and weakness into the elbow, forearm, wrist, and/or the hand. Entrapment of these nerves at the elbow and forearm will commonly mimic Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Individuals who use their hands a great deal, such as with certain sports, or with occupational activities such as typing or using hand tools are more prone to this condition.
Our Approach
With any arm / hand pain a full evaluation of the condition must be completed to determine the specific location of the nerve entrapment. Once identified, Myofascial Release Technique (MRT) can be used to release the nerve entrapment and restore proper health and function to the nerve and surrounding muscles. Simple home stretches and advice regarding the reduction of repetitive stress to the tissues is often needed to minimize stress to the nerve and muscles tin an attempt to prevent recurrences.
